Neue Churerstrasse Mäls Gemeinde Balzers in the Principality of Liechtenstein
Just at daybreak on a 13th of July and travelling northbound on Neue Churerstrasse and entering the village of Mäls in the municipality (besser gesagt, eine Gemeinde) of Balzers in the Principality of Liechtenstein, which of course to outsiders seems like a lot of administrative subdivisions for a sovereign land with only about 37,000 people total. This is a wonderful place, and after all "No European can be in a complete exile in any part of Europe." – E.B. – Off to the right one can make out the early XII century Gutenberg Castle and further off in the distance, on the other side of the Rhenus – Rhein – Rein – Rhin – Rijn – Rhine River and so in Switzerland, the peaks of Gauschla (2,310 m) and Alvier (2,343 m). With 160 km² , this land is really not so small. Travelling in a rather straight line up to the north northeasterly border crossings into Austria, such as the one in Schellenberg Gemeinde, pictured just below, can be a 20 kilometer, even closer to 30 kilometer trek. As for having only about 37,000 people, one might recall that at around the time that Burg Gutenberg – Gutenberg Castle was being built in the XII century London probably did not have half that many inhabitants.

Here in Hinterschellenberg, on the night of 2 May 1945, the asylum-seeking remainder of the "1st Russian National Army of the German Wehrmacht" under Major General A. Holmston-Smyslowsky, with about 500 fully equipped men, crossed the border of the Greater German Reich into Liechtenstein. The first negotiations took place in the "Wirtschaft zum Löwen" tavern, which led to the granting of asylum by the Principality of Liechtenstein. It was the only country which resisted the Soviet Union's extradition demands. After two and a half years, the Russians were free to leave for a country of their choice.
