A Cristandade Europeia Unida

detail from the tympanum and archivolt of the main portal of the Mosteiro de Santa Maria da Vitória
Mosteiro de Santa Maria da Vitória – Monastery of Saint Mary of the Victory, exquisite example of Gothic architecture, built 1386 to c. 1517 in Batalha, the site of a battle, the Battle of Aljubarrota of 1385, an unfortunate chapter in the history of European Christendom. No criticism of the Portuguese is intended. They wanted, and were victorious in obtaining, continued independence from Castile, so João–John I of Portugual found his much smaller forces pitted against, then victorious over, those of Juan–John I of Castile. The commanding general for the victorious Portuguese was (the then 25-year-old!) Nuno Álvares Pereira, who became many years later, in 1423, a Carmelite friar and mystic, and who was beatified by Pope Benedict XV in 1918 and canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009. Still, whomever among us was to blame or was more to blame, might one lament that Portuguese Christians (with English help) found it necessary to war against Castilian-Spanish Christians (with Aragonese-Spanish and French help), and much more so at a time when the Iberian Peninsula had not yet fully rid itself of the Muslim hordes which had plaqued this vital quarter of Christendom since the year 711 Anno Domini. The Reconquista was complete only in 1492, with the final expulsion of the invading Moors from Granada. Pictured here is a detail from the tympanum and archivolt of the main portal.

A Igreja é universal e eterna. Alguma discussão e, felizmente, algumas informações também serão incluídas no filme, United European Christendom – Heal the Schism Now!
